That coin was the 1933 Double Eagle, a $20 gold coin that shouldn’t exist. Designed by renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens and first minted in 1907, the Double Eagle is considered one of the most beautiful coins of all time. In 1933, as part of his effort to bolster the economy during the Great Depression by getting America off of the gold standard, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt ordered the melting down of all 445,500 of the 1933 Double Eagles, which had been struck but never issued.
A handful of these rare coins escaped; only one is known to exist in private ownership today, making it one of the world’s rarest coins. That incredible story is what inspired our next timepiece.
Presenting the Double Eagle Watch, a refined homage to the world’s most valuable coin. This watch features a replica of the 1933 Double Eagle surrounded by a cushion case and a rose gold finish. Complemented by a Cotswold™ mineral crystal and a precision movement that oscillates 32,768 times per second, the Double Eagle Watch is the perfect marriage of classic design and modern technology.
